Legendary Australian rocker and lead singer of The Angels Doc Neeson has died, aged 67. Neeson’s death comes 17 months since he was diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour.
I think myself privileged to have seen "Doc" at the height of his powers at The Sundowner Hotel and to have seen him and the boys re-unite a couple of yonks ago at Ourimbah RSL ...admittedly, I didnt have a clue what the hell he was talking about during his between tune rants...BUT...who did?.
Probably the greatest night of Angel induced rock'n'roll was at Narara the 1st...Doc climbed the staging and sang Marseilles 50 foot up in the air....then there was the New Years night when some arsehat clobbered with a bottle and cut the set short.....you could always rely on Doc to leave an impression...no doubt in my mind.....
His family confirmed Neeson’s passing in a statement released this morning: “It is with deep sadness and regret that the family of Angels’ singer/songwriter Bernard ‘Doc’ Neeson – loving father, family member and friend to so many – announce he has passed away in his sleep at 7.15am today. He has battled with a brain tumour for the last 17 months and sadly lost his fight this morning. He will be deeply missed by his family and partner Annie Souter who would all like to thank everyone for their support through this dark time.”
Developed in the early 1970s from a previous Adelaide band co-founded by brothers Rick and John Brewster, The Angels relocated to Sydney and signed to the Albert label. Vanda & Young produced their 1977 self-titled debut, which included their signature anthem ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again’, while Mark Opitz captured the band’s defining sound – anxious, needling pub-rock – on the classic statements_ Face to Face_ (1978) and No Exit (1979).
The Angels proceeded through many incarnations and albums in the years that followed, and Neeson left the band around the turn of the millennium, after being injured in a car accident. Neeson pursued a solo career but reunited with The Angels for 2008 tour dates celebrating the 30th anniversary of Face to Face.
and once again I am wont to suggest that Bon, Wellsy, Lobby and Thorpey needed some fresh blood for the Universe's greatest rock band
THANKS FOR EVERYTHING "DOC"
