THE BAND THAT GAVE US ANGRY...BUSTER BROWN

Buster Brown was band that was floating around the edges of what I was listening too at the time, The band had some soon to be rather famous members vocalist Angry Anderson with Rose Tattoo and future ACDC drummer Phil Rudd, they formed in Melbourne in 1973. Their sound was bluesy hard rock . Their first album, Something to Say was produced by Lobby Loyde and released in 1974.

Rudd left to join an early version of AC/DC while Anderson continued with new line-ups and eventually disbanded the group in November 1975. Anderson joined Rose Tattoo which later included former Buster Brown band mates, Geordie Leach on bass guitar and Dallas 'Digger' Royall on drums. According to Australian rock music historian Ian McFarlane, Buster Brown were "one of the most notorious street level boogie outfits of its day ... The boys built up a solid following around the pubs, and among the skinheads on the suburban dance circuit".
the band was formed in Melbourne in 1973 with Gary 'Angry' Anderson on lead vocals (ex-Peace Power and Purity), John Moon on guitar, Paul Grant on guitar, Phil Rudd on drums, Ian Ryan on bass guitar (ex-Ash, Chook) and Chris Wilson on keyboards.

They enjoyed local notoriety and played at the 1974 Sunbury Festival in January. Later that year, Mushroom Records released a Various Artists live album, Highlights of Sunbury '74 Part 1 which included the group's tracks "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Buster Brown". Early in the year, Geordie Leach replaced Ryan on bass guitar. Along with Coloured Balls, Billy Thorpe, Madder Lake and Chain, they were supported by suburban-based sharpie gangs, which made their gigs some of the more hazardous to attend

The band's first single, "Buster Brown" was issued in July 1974 by Mushroom Records. Veteran rocker, Lobby Loyde (lead guitarist of Coloured Balls) produced their debut album, Something to Say which was also released in December but by the end of the year the group had split with Rudd joining an early version of AC/DC. A second single, "Something to Say" was subsequently in January 1975. From April to June 1975 the line-up resumed as Anderson, Leach and Wilson with Dennis Miller on guitar and Trevor Young on drums (ex-Coloured Balls).[ In July, Anderson formed a third version of the band with Ken Firth on bass guitar (ex-Tully), Billy Miller on guitar and vocals, Dave Springfield on guitar and drummer Dallas 'Digger' Royal (ex-Band of Talabene).

The group disbanded in November 1975, Anderson initially tried to form a band with Lobby Loyde...Firth, Miller and Springfield regrouped as The Ferrets.

and as usual, as my gift to you is a Buster Brown comp I whacked together

BUSTER BROWN ROCKED

THE PARTY BOYS...no songs TOO sacred

I must admit to digging the Party Boys heaps....you never knew who was gonna be in the band, what the setlist was...it was musical russian roulette...great stuff....I was even a fan of the Swanee fronted version....the one were I heard people yelling sell outs at gigs...yeah I know

Ex-Mondo Rock member Paul Christie formed Party Boys in 1982 as an occasional “supergroup” consisting of some of Australia’s finest musicians. The concept was that Christie would employ players (all of whom had other commitments) when the need arose, and that the set they played would consist entirely of cover versions.

By 1987, the band had released four live albums (and a Best Of collection), with Live At Several 21sts (1983) making the national Top 10. The band finally entered the recording studio in 1987 to put down a cover version of John Kongas’ 1971 hit He’s Gonna Step On You Again, which reached Number One.

The Various live's of Dave Evans

Before there was Bon ...THERE WAS DAVE...Evans that is, along with Angus and Malcolm Young, Colin Burgess and Larry Van Kriedt he was there for ACDC's formation. He was a member of the band for about a year before being replaced by Bon Scott around October 1974.

I distinctly remember seeing the clip for AkkaDakka's first song Can I sit next to you girl, on tele... I thought they aint too foul, my kinda stuff...but, next time I see 'em Dave has been replaced by Bon, dunno why..dont really care....still its a nice thing for your resume aint it, singer with one of the baddest bands on the planet...

Next time I saw him Evans had joined the kings of Newcastle, the mighty Rabbit, replacing original singer Greg Douglas. Rabbit released 6 singles and two albums between 1975 and 1977. Rabbit were described as frenetic ( dunno by who, whoever said that was a dork) and were famous for their wild stage act and the second album, Too Much Rock n Roll, was released in Europe and Japan with mild success....I actually had the great good fortune to see them live at the Mattara festival in 1977...rockin band indeed

it was at some point in 1980, I lost track of Dave on the pub scene...his had a couple of other bands, including Dave Evans & The Hot Cockerels and Thunder Down Under....I just never got to see any of them....

Dave has also released two solo albums. The first was a live recording, "A Hell Of A Night", which was a memorial gig for the late Bon Scott featuring Rohan Moran on lead guitar, Simon Croft on rhythm guitar, Steve Michelmore on drums, and Dave Ross on bass. On the 20th anniversary of his death, with Melbourne AC/DC tribute band Thunderstruck after Evans was invited to perform by friend and Thunderstruck member, Simon Croft and a live recording was released in the year 2000. The second of which was an album released in February 2006 that was recorded with some of the members of his previous groups, Rabbit and Hot Cockerel plus some of Newcastle's finest rockers, and was entitled Sinner....(check the link at the bottom of the blog ;))

He has toured in Europe with Munich band, Thunderstruck and with his own band, The Badasses in support to USA southern rock legends, Molly Hatchet , and the critics loved him...yeh go figure that one out, a critic not being critical

Dave returned to Australia in late 2008, to perform at the Adelaide International Gu
itar Festival with The Party Boys..makes sense, every other bugger has played with 'em

In 2009 Dave Evans signed a global distribution and publishing agreement with leading Australian indie power house label Blue Pie for his classic rock album "Sinner". "Sold my Soul to Rock and Roll" was the 1st single to be lifted from the album and has been promoted to radio and media globally from July 2009 onwards. Dave toured Australia for three months with The Aussie Badasses and The Classic Aussie Rock show performing his Sinner Album

In April 2010 Dave Evans released his "Judgement Day" album in the UK through independent label Rocksector Records & in May/June 2010 undertook a UK Tour with a UK version of his Baddasses backing band. The band included Chris Appleton from Fury UK on lead guitar, Marshall Gill from New Model Army on lead guitar, Martin McNee from Fury UK on drums & Leon Gill on bass.

With AC/DC
"Can I Sit Next to You, Girl" (single) (1974)
"Rockin' in the Parlour" (single) (1974)

With Rabbit
    Rabbit (1976)
Too Much Rock N Roll (1976)

With Thunder Down Under
    Thunder Down Under (1986)

Solo
    Hell of a Night .(2001)
    Sinner (2006)
    Judgement Day (2008)

SO....There you go...one of the best frontman in Aussie Rock, who deserved so muuch more...but thats a regular story aint it...shame ...

BOURNE TO ROCK

I'm gonna step away from the 70's and 80's this time, although by listening to whats on the compilation, you gonna think I only stepped about 3 inches to the left...Ladies and Gents, friends AND associates...its my extreme pleasure to introduce you to the next big thing to come roaring outta Aussie....AIRBOURNE....I could bang on for the next wee while telling you how great they are...but great doesn't do them justice....these cats are......

                                                     AWESOME

Airbourne were bo(u)rn(e) in late 2001 in the Victorian country town of Warrnambool by Joel O'Keeffe and his younger brother Ryan,  Joel and Ryan had played guitar and rums since a young age. Joel met David Roads when the two worked at the Hotel Warrnambool pulling pots for the locals.

Joel and Dave brought their guitars to work and, after their shifts, jammed on song ideas (as you do) Roadsie was asked to join the O’Keeffe brothers on rhythm guitar for rehearsals at their house. By late 2001, Adam Jacobson had joined on bass guitar, the name Airbourne was agreed upon and played regular gigs at the other local pub in their home town,  the Criterion Hotel

In March 2003 the four-piece won a state-wide band competition, Push-On, in Melbourne. Their early material, as anyone can tell, was influenced by Aussie legends AC/DC, The Angels, Billy Thorpe and Rose Tattoo. They recorded an eight-track extended play, Ready to Rock, which appeared in June 2004 as an independent self-funded release. By that time Jacobson was replaced by Justin "Streety" Street on bass guitar – Ryan had met Streety while the pair were stumbling home drunk from a party one night....amazing , right?

In early 2005, the band relocated to Melbourne and in August, they signed a five album record deal with Capitol Records. According to Joel, while the band were living in a shared house they threw a party, and during listening to a Krokus CD, Rock the Block, a blown fuse resulted in a fire burning the back part of the house. The group have supported Mötley Crüe, Motörhead, Iron Maiden and The Rolling Stones, as well as performed at all major summer music festivals

In 2006 Airbourne travelled to the United States to begin work on their first studio album, Runnin' Wild, with producer Bob Marlette (Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper).Runnin' Wild was released in Australia on 23 June 2007. Three singles were issued from the album, "Runnin' Wild", "Too Much, Too Young, Too Fast", and "Diamond in the Rough". In February, Capitol Records had cancelled their contract with Airbourne, but the album was still issued in Australia through EMI. In June, the band signed with Roadrunner Records for international distribution.

The album peaked in the top 30 on the ARIA Albums Chart in Australia, top 40 on New Zealand's RIANZ Albums Chart and appeared on charts in Austria, Switzerland and France. During late 2007, the group toured the United States supporting Kid Rock and Korn. Runnin' Wild was issued in North America, Europe and Japan in January 2008, after which they relocated permanently to the US. The album reached the Top 100 on the UK Albums Chart and appeared on the Billboard 200. In September 2007, they issued a five-track live extended play, Live at the Playroom

In a interview with MetalSucks, Joel discussed comparisons with AC/DC, "whoever you are when you come out, especially if you’re from Australia and you sound like we do, you’re going to get compared to anyone who is out there. It doesn’t matter who you are, you are going to get compared to somebody. To be compared to the best rock and roll band in the business, who are still going today and are about to release another album, there is no higher compliment... In November at the Astoria in London, Dan Hawkins (Stone Gods/The Darkness) joined Airbourne on stage to play the AC/DC song, "Whole Lotta Rosie". Hawkins played Joel's guitar while Joel sang without any guitar.

Roads confirmed that in January 2009, Airbourne would enter the studio to begin recording their second album, No Guts. No Glory.... In the 17 January issue of Kerrang! magazine, Joel revealed they had earlier written the tracks in the Criterion Hotel, "We're getting all our gear plugged in and getting set for Aussie pub rock written in an Aussie rock pub.

And just between me you and the chooks...it turned out a great friggin slab of Aussie Rock

CHOIRBOYS..Never Gonna...Stop Rockin

One of the backbones of Aussie rock....The Choirboys, I saw them a couple of times prior to the "Run to Paradise" success, they are one hell of a good band in any version, saw them support Bon Jovi on the Slippery when Wet tour at the Sydney Ent Cent...they only had a half hour or so, but they got over BIG time

The band itself was formed on the Northern Beaches area of Sydney as a hard rock pub band in the midst of 1979... Original members were Brad Carr on lead guitar, Mark Gable on vocals, Ian Hulme on bass guitar and Lindsay Tebbutt on drums

RUN TO PARADISE

In 1983, after one of their demos was sent to Albert Productions record producer George Young (older brother of Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC) the band was signed to Albert Records. Jim Manzie produced their self-titled debut album, Choirboys, which was released in July.

The first single, "Never Gonna Die," came out in August and reached No. 30 and it was an absolute ball tearer . The Guru, Molly Melldrum claimed the album was "destined to become an Aussie classic"...AND HE WASNT FAR WRONG...(as usual)

They toured as support to The Angels and Rose Tattoo and then Cold Chisel invited The Choirboys to support them on their Last Stand Tour. however in November, Gable's vocal cords had ruptured and they were unable to join that tour—they spent 1984 and 1985 in hiatus waiting for him to recover.

They recorded their second and biggest selling album, Big Bad Noise with producers Peter Blyton (The Radiators, Machinations) and Brian McGee (The Rolling Stones,
Cyndi Lauper). The next single "Run to Paradise" reached No. 3 in October and was the 11th highest selling single of the eighties in Australia. Released in the United States, it appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at No. 33 on the Mainstream Rock chart in 1989.[Big Bad Noise peaked at No. 5 on the Kent Music Report Albums Chart in April 1988 and went double platinum. It was ranked No. 21 for the year in Australia.Other singles from the album included "Boys Will Be Boys" and "Struggle Town" reaching No. 14 and No. 34 respectively.

It was at this point after Big bad noise that they sorta dropped off my gigs to see list, dunno why, just didnt see them much after that....did see them on the Countdown Tour, Gable was in fine voice and had Acer Arena at Sydney Olympic Park singing along loud and long.

I have been accused of living in the past whenit comes to my selection of music, but I still think the first two albums are the best
